3 Toxic Rules About Job Interviews

There are so many unwritten rules about Recruitment, Interviewing, and Hiring I’ve never understood… even when I was a Recruiter!

You’ve probably heard me say this before: Recruitment and Hiring have been un-inclusive and inequitable by design. For way too long!

There are so many implicit, unwritten, arbitrary (and completely discriminatory!) rules that Recruiters, HR Professionals, Interviewers, and Hiring Managers follow without question. And the worst part? Candidates often don’t even know those rules exist in the first place.

So, today, I want to review some of those unwritten, confidential, and toxic rules that never made sense to me, even when I was the one reviewing resumes, interviewing candidates, and guiding Hiring Managers along the process.

In all honesty, I want to see these rules skyrocket to the sun! So we can all start being more intentional, inclusive, accessible, and equitable with our hiring practices (and in life, of course!)

Don’t criticize your previous employer during an interview.

I simply don’t get this one. No matter how much you try to explain it to me.
