A New “Women in the Workplace” Report Shows That Things Haven’t Changed Much

The new LeanIn & McKinsey “Women in the Workplace” report just dropped, and we need to talk about it.… because, friends, nothing has really changed.

The report is quite comprehensive and thorough, so I won’t be able to cover all the key points today. However, I do want to focus on a topic that is very close to my heart: “Why women in leadership roles are switching jobs.”

Buckle up, readers; this will be a bumpy ride.

In the report, the researchers who surveyed more than 40,000 employees learned that

  • 37% of women leaders have had a coworker get credit for their idea.
  • Women leaders are 2x as likely to be mistaken for someone more junior.
  • Women leaders are overworked and under-recognized, and 43% are burned out.
  • Women leaders are 2x as likely as men leaders to spend more time on DEI work, AND 40% of women leaders say their DEI work isn’t acknowledged in performance reviews.
  • Women leaders are more than 1.5x as men to have left a previous job because of the company’s lack of ED&I commitment.
