An Urgent Reminder During Hispanic History Month: Latinas Can “Work Until They Die” and Never Recover Wage Gap Losses
I understand this is hard to grasp, but it’s important we understand that Latinas face the largest wage gap across 94% of occupations.
Yeah, you read that right.
Latina Women in the US are the lowest-paid female demographic in the US. On average, Latinas are paid 53% less than white men and 31% less than white women… and if they have kids? That pay gap widens to 55%.
So, with all that in mind, If a Latina were to work full-time for life, she’s still losing over $1.1 million over her career. That’s about $30k a year!
And the pay gap is just the tip of the iceberg!
Because it doesn’t matter how educated, how enterprising, and how much Latine Women ask for raises and promotions… they just don’t get them.
Unfortunately, the “Latinas are domestic and not ambitious enough” stereotype is alive and well; thank you very much. And it’s costing Latine women their careers, their livelihood, and their wealth. At this rate, Latinas won’t achieve equal pay for another 432 years. For context, the white-women pay gap will take about 136 years to close.
