Hiring Managers Don’t Know What They’re Doing; They Just Vibe

As someone who worked in Recruitment for 17+ years, I can assure you, this happens more than we’d like to admit.

Does the screenshot below surprise you? Did you know that this is what Hiring Managers really think?

As you know, I spent a huge chunk of my career in the recruitment industry. I was a hands-on recruiter, a corporate recruitment trainer, a recruitment operations director, a global department head, etc. If there’s a job to be done in recruitment, I’ve probably done it at some point in my career.

As such, I interviewed thousands of candidates, coached hundreds upon hundreds of Interviewers and Hiring Managers, and trained even more Recruiters. I’ve worked internally and externally, both building processes and systems from scratch or trying to rebuild hiring practices that hadn’t been updated — or followed! — in decades.

And there’s one thing I can say with absolute certainty: It is extremely rare to find a Hiring Manager that is fully trained in interviewing candidates and making hiring decisions. It is even rarer to find Hiring Managers fully committed and interested in building inclusive, diverse, and equitable teams.
