How to Know if a Company Has a Toxic Culture Before Applying for Their Roles

There’s no perfect answer to this question, but I can still help you identify many company culture red flags! Especially if you’re actively looking for a new role.

Companies usually use their career pages to describe their culture and, by doing so, attract more candidates. They might have pictures of their employees, a “day in the life” section, and video interviews with employees and managers.

Some other companies might even have pictures of their offices, information about their benefits, and details about their diversity data.

Whatever the case might be, you want to keep in mind that all that glitters is not gold… sometimes, it truly is just cheap glitter.

I always suggest doing as much research as you can about a company before you interview with them. You know, reading their Glassdoor reviews; looking at what their former employees are saying on LinkedIn; or even looking at websites like Fishbowl, FairyGodBoss, or Comparably. But that’s not enough…

You also want to make sure that you’re picking up on red flags on your own, and not by a third party’s opinion. And you can do that by reading their job…
